Today’s question is around the idea of resistance to culture change.
First off, culture resistance is common.
So if you are experiencing culture resistance, just know that it is normal.
So, culture resistance operates on a bell curve.
You are going to have some early adopters, some that are on-the-fence, and then some laggards that are resisting.
I always look at these situations from the perspective of an individual and an organization.
As some of you know, the way I look at individuals and organizations is through the lens of what I call the 3P and 3L North Star.
So for individuals, it’s the 3L North Star which are livelihood, lifestyle, and legacy.
And then at the company or organizational level, it’s the 3P North Star which are profits, people, and purpose.
Align the 3L and 3P North Stars
From that context, when you’re looking at resistance, you need to know and understand what is that individual’s 3L North Star.
Or the team or the group’s 3L North Stars at the individual level.
Because, as we know, people need different things for different reasons.
So what you are trying to do is align.
Understand their 3L North Star and then align it to your 3P North Star.
In some cases, the 3L and 3P North Stars just won’t align.
And again, that’s where you head into the potential where this is just not a fit.
But what you are really trying to do then as a leader and executive, is always looking to align the 3L and the 3P North Star.
Overcome What’s Lacking
So oftentimes, what I find is that resistance comes with:
1. A lack of understanding
2. A lack of caring
3. A lack of trust
A lot of that resistance can be overcome by understanding someone’s 3L North Star, and how culture resistance can align with the 3P North Star.
I’ve mentioned in my executive coaching calls or in answers to questions before, is this idea.
They just want to know that either their direct report level or company level support their future in some way.
And then the resistance will really melt away.
So look at that, because the dynamic here is individuals and the organization itself.
Break it out into 3L and 3P North Star and assess.
How aligned can this get?
If it cannot, it might be time to part ways respectfully.
If it can, then you’ve overcome some of that resistance.
