Today’s question is about listening.
How do you get people to listen and take action?
The thing is, a lot of executives that I speak with are having trouble with their leaders listening.
I think what’s happening is that there are a lot of information— a lot of things are going on.
A part of what we’re living in and working in today is so overwhelming with information and inputs.
There is a way though that can help your ability to communicate and connect, and also have people listen and take action.
So what I’m talking about here is ultimately, this aspect of being able to communicate with a few key elements.
These key elements are:
The Uppercase ‘Why’ And The Lowercase ‘Why’
What we’re talking about then is when you’re communicating with your leaders and you want them to listen, start with the why.
Ultimately, there’s an uppercase ‘why’ and a lowercase ‘why’.
The uppercase ‘why’ is kind of the purpose of the organization and that should always just be a recurring theme.
The lowercase ‘why’ is why this particular thing needs to happen or why this thing is being shared with them.
You really focus on the ‘why’ every time and then once the ‘why’ is shared then it’s into story.
As humans we all connect with story.
And so tie it with the story of what came about or how this came about or what it will lead in to.
Such as, “storify” this communication.
And then lastly, is really wanting them not only to listen but take action.
Leave them with the how.
So then they basically walk out of the room or get off the Zoom or the call, ready to take action.
Because they know the why – big capital ‘why’ and lowercase ‘why’.
They have a story connected to it, and that gets inside with them. And then they know how.
Why – Why – Story – How
That is how we get people to listen and get people to take action in this information overwhelming world that we live in.
